Tie Dye Tips

This tie dye tip list will hopefully prevent you from making some of the more common mistakes and help you end up with a successful batch of garments on your very first attempt, no matter how experienced you are.

  1. Always use 100% cotton shirts.
  2. Always cover work surfaces with a plastic table cloth or garbage bags
  3. Wear old clothes, an apron or something you don’t mind getting stained
  4. Use rubber gloves
  5. Plan out your designs and color arrangements beforehand. You will end up with a much better final product
  6. Be patient. The more time you take, the better the quality of the tie-dyes.
  7. Be sure and follow every step of the basic instructions and pattern specific instructions completely.
  8. Wash your shirts just before dyeing and dye them while they are still damp
  9. Mix dyes right before using and throw away any unused dyes. The longer dye sits unused the less vivid the colors are.
